This Matinee is very similar to the Matinee featured on page 95 of Joanne Olian's book "Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from 'La Mode Illustree'". We use this book as one of our sources in identifying and dating our Victorian and Edwardian clothes. Our Matinee has the drop shoulders dating it to the 1860s, where as the one in the book does not have the drop shoulders and is dated at 1887. Our Matinee is also very similar in style to the #12 white bodice, she has listed in her book on page 5, dated 1862.
It has s very faint age stain on the top back by the collar. You would have to really look close to see it. It only has a few pin holes, possibly 2 in the back and a 1/4" tiny tear in the back and one tiny 1/4" tear in the lace on the bottom front. We did not repair them since they should be repaired professionally. For its age, it is in excellent condition. It has been gently soaked when we first obtained it. It was obtained from an estate sell several years back. It was found in a truck with other civil war era pieces, including the fiche we have listed this week. 124.95 Lemaire Mother of Pearl Opera Glasses - Item #221
This is a great working pair of Lemaire Mother of Pearl Opera Glasses. They are stamped on the underside of the middle bar with the Lemaire logo "bee" on one side and the number #63 of the other side of the bridge. The frame appears to be aluminum and the remainder brass. When we purchased these opera glasses from an auction house, we were told they dated pre-civil war. We have not been able to verify the information. The optics work great and they expand and collapse as they were meant to. There is some rubbing to the brass from where fingers have been as shown in the picture. Please email or phone if you would like additional pictures or a picture of the stamps. Great looking pair for the opera or to have as a decoration on your vanity.
